Restless legs syndrome: causes and methods of treatment?

Restless legs syndrome: causes and methods of treatment?

Diagnostics of SID does not present difficulties for a specialist. It begins with listening to the patient’s complaints.

Four criteria are based on the survey:

  • The patient has a desire to move his legs at night in order to get rid of unpleasant sensations.

  • Discomfort is increasing at rest. During physical activity, he either is absent altogether, or is weakly expressed.

  • When a person moves his legs, discomfort passes.

  • At night, unpleasant sensations gain maximum intensity.

If a person answers all four questions in an affirmative, then he can be suspected of restless legs syndrome with a high degree of probability.

Be sure to focus efforts on the search for the cause, which provoked the RLS. If this syndrome is primary, then in the end it will not be possible to detect it.

Methods that allow us to refine the diagnosis:

  • Polysomnography. This method allows you to identify involuntary movements during sleep.

  • Electro neuromyography.

  • A blood test for determining the level of iron, magnesium, B vitamins, rheumatoid factor in it.

  • Reberg’s test and biochemical blood test, which allow to assess the efficiency of the kidneys.

  • Ultrasound examination of the vessels of the legs.

It is important to conduct differential diagnosis with other diseases that have similar symptoms.
