Purulent mumps

Purulent parotitis

What is purulent mumps?

Purulent parotitis is accompanied by a purulent inflammation of the parotid salivary gland. In the secretion of the gland with a microbiological study, one can detect staphylococci and streptococci. The ways of spreading the infection include dental (the infection spreads in the mouth), hematogenous (the infection carries with blood flow) and lymphogenous (the transfer of infection contributes to lymph).

Types and forms of purulent mumps

There are several forms of the disease. Typical symptoms of the catarrhal form are reddening of the mucous membrane, edema and thick secret, which is released from the salivary gland.

Purulent form – the most common, is accompanied by leukocyte infiltration of the parenchyma of the gland. In some places, foci of purulent tissue melting are visible on the surface of the gland, saliva may be absent altogether or be released in very small amounts. For this form, pus flows into the neck, the temporal region, etc.

are characteristic. In the case of a gangrenous form of the parenchyma tissue, the glands undergo necrosis and melt, and the gland itself can be almost completely destroyed. Symptoms of purulent mumps

During the course of the disease, the symptoms of purulent mumps start in the second half of the disease, if the parotitis appears as a complication after the operation, then its symptoms are manifested in fourth to fifth day after surgery. The disease is accompanied by fever, headaches, painful sensations in the process of chewing or swallowing. A general blood test in this case shows leukocytosis and a shift of the leukocyte formula to the left.

On examination, swelling, tightening and enlargement of the salivary glands can be noted. The skin over the gland blushes and swells. On the oral mucosa appears edema. Redness is noticeable in the outlet of the canal of the parotid salivary gland. After three to four days after the mumps start, purulent contents are released from the canal.

Treatment of purulent mumps

Catarrhal and purulent parotitis are cured almost completely, and the iron restores its functions in full after the appropriate therapy. the first stage of the disease treatment of purulent mumps is carried out conservatively: antibiotic therapy is prescribed, hygienic procedures for oral cavity treatment are performed, a certain diet is observed, etc.

The onset of a purulent process involves carrying out the operation urgently. Surgical removal of salivary stones, the focus of inflammation is opened and drained. Thanks to surgery, the tension in the tissues of the salivary gland is reduced. In the operation, cuts up to three cm are made taking into account the location of individual branches of the facial nerve.
