The mysterious flu-like illness that affects men after orgasm is extremely rare. But scientists warn that its prevalence may be higher than we think – and all because of the difficulties with the diagnosis.
Sciense Alert recalls that a state called Post-Argasmic Pain Syndrome (POIS) was first talked about in 2002. However, since then, about 50 cases have been reported, each of which was characterized by a decrease in mood, loss of strength and other symptoms similar to influenza or allergies, after orgasm.
Symptoms that occur within a few seconds, minutes or even hours after ejaculation, may also include muscle weakness, fever and sweating, irritability, memory problems, concentration dips and incoherent speech. According to a new survey presented by scientists from Tulane University and published in Sexual Medicine Reviews, POIS is a chronic disorder whose symptoms can disturb a man for a week after orgasm. complaining about what we still know about the disease is not enough, because there are too few studies on the topic. And this is in view of the fact that the syndrome postorgazmicheskoj morbidity (also: a syndrome postorgazmicheskoj a malaise) has been officially brought in the list of rare frustration US National Institutes of Health. Probably, the more cases will be registered, the more often the studies of men with this unusual condition will be conducted. Experts say that POIS does not necessarily occur after sex, it can also occur after masturbation or involuntary ejaculation in sleep.
Of course, the most obvious question about POIS is why does this happen? According to researchers from Tulane University, the leading hypothesis at the moment is the one that was presented in 2002 by Dutch scientists who first described the disease. The point here is that POIS is an autoimmune or allergic disorder that causes an inflammatory reaction in the male body in response to some amount of seminal fluid. In simple terms, a man most likely has an allergy to his own sperm (namely, the substance that is contained in it) when it comes into contact with the skin. This theory is confirmed by experiments using a dermatological test, in which 33 patients with POIS participated. In 29 volunteers, an allergic reaction was detected after the serum with their sperm in the composition was injected under the skin, while the introduction of placebo serum did not have the same effect. But even more interesting here is that unbanal injections are probably able to help cope with the syndrome of postorgasmic soreness. So, in one of the studies, where two POIS patients were given such injections once a month, gradually increasing serum sperm concentration, the men reported a decrease in symptoms after 15 and 30 months of treatment. As for the female body, at that time only one case of POIS in a woman was recorded. However, the researchers do not exclude that women can be affected by the antigen contained in the sperm. As well as that, however, that the cause of POIS may not be the composition of the sperm, but, say, the chemical imbalance in the brain (according to another hypothesis) that causes symptoms similar to the removal of opioids from the body.
